When producing pipe, DeMarco Machine utilizes four key machining processes: boring, turning, honing, and drilling. All these processes involve the removal of material to form metal bars into the ideal form for their customers’ applications. First, they drill a hole through the bar from end to end to form it into a pipe. The pipe’s inner diameter (ID) is then increased as desired through use of a boring tool, and similar is done through turning processes to achieve the desired outer diameter (OD). Honing is then used to finish the surfaces of the pipe.

According to David Morse, the maintenance supervisor at DeMarco Machine, the shop is incredibly self-sufficient. They complete the entire production process in-house. They can drill holes from half an inch to twelve inches, and the bars they machine can have up to a 24-inch OD. They also assemble and wire their own panels for the machines they use in their shop. This is where David and his team come in. They build and maintain the machines and control panels used at DeMarco Machine. “We can build a panel in about a week,” he explains, considering their workload. Some of these panels are more complicated than others, ranging from controls for drills to controls for oil pumps. David also points out that their processes are completely automated between the start and stop of the machines. They “set bar in the machine, set up the drill head, and push start on the spindle drive. The machine [works] on its own until they press stop.”
